Visiting Vietnam is a life-changing experience
Prepare to be forever transformed by the incredible warmth of the people and the deep connection with family. Witness the raw contrast between the glitz of the vibrant Ho Chi Minh City and the harsh, raw reality of lives impacted by oral cancer.
The Vietnamese experience alarming rates of oral cancer due to lifestyle risk factors. Hospitals have no frills of modern society and are often without air conditioning. Patients share a bed. Families bring food and care for their loved ones. You will meet and see in action the dedicated oncologists that give their lives and hearts to the care of their patients.
Oral health professionals’ understanding of unique risks associated with cultural and social oral habits (ie, chewing betel nut, smoking, alcohol abuse) provides an opportunity for us to help patients alleviate adverse effects on their overall health.
In this in-depth learning experience, dental professionals and students will interact with patients and their doctors.
Learn about the social determinants that hinder the patient and their care. We will visit orphanages and provide basic oral healthcare for these little ones who are affected by Agent Orange, which is still a major contributor to birth defects today.
See first-hand how these health issues deeply affect the lives of the Vietnamese and gain greater confidence in recognizing the signs and symptoms of oral cancer and the care of our patients. In the process, we also gain a greater compassion for people and deepen our passion for global oral health.
The work of the oral health provider is more important than ever due to global trends and the alarming rise in oral cancer incidence rates.
